This week, social media platforms are introducing new features to keep users engaged for longer periods.

From YouTube’s gaming features to Threads’ TweetDeck-inspired design, each platform is vying for a share of your time.

YouTube

YouTube has launched “Playables,” a new gaming feature that allows users to play simple games like Angry Birds Showdown and Cut the Rope directly on the platform. This move follows LinkedIn’s recent introduction of games and aims to increase user engagement.

Threads

Threads is rolling out a TweetDeck-inspired design to all desktop users, allowing them to pin columns and track multiple streams of information simultaneously. This feature is a nod to the beloved Twitter client and signals Threads’ efforts to replicate the best of Twitter’s past.

Instagram

Instagram is enhancing its Notes feature with new functionality, including Notes Prompts, @ mentions, and likes. While this move is popular with teens, some users are also seeing unskippable ads, which could be a boon for brands but risks alienating users.

TikTok

TikTok is beta testing TikTok Studio, a new app that brings all creator tools together in one place. The app is currently available for Android users and will roll out for iOS in the coming weeks. Additionally, TikTok is introducing DM streaks, which reward users with digital dopamine for consecutive days of messaging friends.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn has reduced the size of unsponsored shared links, making them smaller than sponsored links. This change may shift posting strategies and encourage more “link in comments” posts.

Meta

Finally, Meta is offering a two-week free trial for its Meta Verified subscription, which includes features like a verified badge and enhanced support. This trial allows users to test the service on Instagram and Facebook.

Each of the social media platforms is fighting for your attention, and it’s clear that the battle for user engagement is heating up. Which features will you find most useful? Only time will tell.
