Siri 2.0 for iPhones might be even further from launch than initially expected, according to the latest update from Mark Gurman in his July 7 Power On newsletter.
Gurman previously reported that the revamped Siri, powered by Apple Intelligence and included in the iOS 18 update, wouldn’t be fully available until next year, rather than this fall when Apple Intelligence is generally set to debut. Now, Gurman offers more precise timing for Siri 2.0’s rollout, stating it will appear in beta form in January 2025, with the final version launching alongside the iOS 18.4 update in spring 2025.
Siri’s New Design and ChatGPT Integration
As a partial consolation, Gurman notes that Siri’s new design, featuring a glowing border and an updated logo, will still launch in fall 2024. Additionally, ChatGPT support will be introduced, enabling Siri to use the OpenAI chatbot for queries it cannot handle alone.
Gradual Rollout of AI Features
Apple announced its upcoming AI features at WWDC 2024 last month, emphasizing its commitment to staying competitive with Google and Samsung. However, Apple is taking a cautious approach to rolling them out. Even upon its launch, Apple Intelligence will be in beta and initially available only in U.S. English, which could pose a barrier for some users awaiting Siri 2.0.
These enhancements are timely for Siri, which has often been viewed as a relatively basic digital assistant. With its new AI capabilities, Siri 2.0 will be able to perform tasks within apps, such as editing photos, and understand on-screen content to better interpret commands, as demonstrated at WWDC.
Upcoming iOS 18 Features
iOS 18 will introduce several exciting features to iPhones, independent of Apple Intelligence. These include options to recolor app icons, customize the Control Center, a redesigned Photos app, and a new dedicated Passwords app.
iOS 18 is expected to launch this fall, likely coinciding with the release of the iPhone 16. While the new iOS will be compatible with the 2018 iPhone Xs and later models, the latest AI-powered Siri features will be best experienced on the newest iPhone models, or at least the iPhone 15 Pro.
