Google is taking significant steps to reduce the influx of spam calls that many of us endure daily. Recently, Android Authority identified a new anti-spam feature embedded in the Google Phone app, suggesting it may soon be available for Pixel phones.
Earlier this year, Google rolled out the Gemini AI-powered alert system, a sophisticated tool designed to detect scam calls as they occur. This system alerts users to potential threats in real-time. Although this feature won’t be included in Android 15, its eventual release is highly anticipated.
The latest code analysis reveals a nearly completed tool named “Sharpie,” which distinguishes between scams and spam. Currently, Sharpie focuses on spam, but future updates may provide more nuanced detection.
Sharpie also includes a manual reporting feature, allowing Pixel users to flag suspicious calls. While the Gemini Nano AI will automatically verify legitimate calls, users can report any that evade detection. Unlike cloud-based AI solutions such as ChatGPT, this technology operates directly on the device, optimizing power usage and efficiency.
Privacy is a critical concern, as the tool listens to every call. However, the system is opt-in, giving users the choice to enable it. This feature is currently limited to devices that support Gemini Nano, specifically the Pixel 8 series and the Samsung Galaxy S24 lineup.
Another promising feature is the Lookup button, which helps users identify unknown callers. When an unfamiliar number rings, users can tap the Lookup button to determine whether the call is from a legitimate contact or a known spammer.
The exact launch date for these tools remains uncertain, but the code hints at a near-future release, possibly coinciding with the launch of the Pixel 9 lineup.
