If you’ve recently updated to iOS 18 and noticed your iPhone isn’t responding to your touches or taps, you’re not alone. iPhone users, particularly those with the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, have been reporting intermittent touchscreen issues, where gestures like swipes and taps seem to be ignored. This problem isn’t limited to the latest devices either—older models like the iPhone 14, and even some iPads, are experiencing similar issues.

The Scope of the Problem

Reports of iPhone Touchscreen Problems have emerged from various users, particularly those using the iPhone 16 Pro models. The issue isn’t consistent, making it harder to pinpoint a definitive cause. In some cases, the touch recognition issue resolves itself within moments, only to return later.

While newer models seem to be at the forefront of these reports, older devices, including iPads and iPhones from the iPhone 14 series, have also been affected. The problem appears widespread, though it remains unclear just how many users are impacted by this bug.

iOS 18’s Sensitivity to Blame?

Experts are suggesting that the culprit could be an overly sensitive touch rejection system in iOS 18. Originally reported in more detail by 9to5Mac, this system is designed to differentiate between intentional taps and accidental touches when holding the device. While this feature typically prevents unintended actions, its heightened sensitivity might be interfering with legitimate touch inputs.

Notably, Mastodon user Khaos Tian demonstrated how to trigger this issue intentionally, providing further insight into the problem. However, even with such examples, it remains unclear if this is the sole reason behind the glitches.

Camera Control Button

Some users have reported problems specifically with the new Camera Control button, adding another layer of confusion. It’s still uncertain whether this is linked to the broader touch rejection issue, but it raises concerns that the button’s function could also be blocked by iOS 18’s palm rejection system.

A Familiar Issue with a New Twist

If this sounds familiar, it might remind you of a similar issue from 2020 when the iPhone 12 mini faced touch sensitivity problems. However, in that case, the issue was tied to external factors like cases and screen protectors affecting the phone’s touch response. In contrast, the current bug seems to be rooted in iOS 18 itself, making it more of a software-related glitch.

Is It a Software or Hardware Problem?

Given that the issue is impacting both newer and older devices, including iPads, the evidence points to iOS 18 as the likely source of the problem rather than any hardware defect. Apple has yet to release an official statement, leaving users in limbo for now. However, considering the growing reports, it’s possible that a fix may be rolled out in a future software update.

What to Do If You’re Affected

If your device is experiencing this issue, you may want to keep an eye on upcoming iOS updates. While a permanent fix is likely in the works, restarting your phone or simply waiting for the touch recognition to return may serve as temporary solutions for now. Additionally, removing any cases or screen protectors could help, as external accessories have been known to interfere with touch sensitivity in the past.
