Huawei recently teased the world with a glimpse of its revolutionary tri-fold smartphone, offering a closer look at how the device transforms. The smartphone features two hinges—one on either side—allowing it to unfold into a shape reminiscent of the letter “Z” during its transition. This innovative folding mechanism is complemented by a sleek, vegan leather back that covers all three segments of the display. Not only does the leather finish give it a premium look, but it also adds essential grip when the device is fully unfolded.
On the rear of the smartphone, you’ll notice a distinct camera module with four circular lenses, arranged alongside an LED flash strip. Interestingly, the camera island doesn’t adhere to a typical circular design but takes on a more geometric, octagonal shape. Adding to the camera system’s credibility is the XMAGE branding, highlighting Huawei’s focus on enhanced mobile photography.
Pre-Orders Begin in China Ahead of Official Launch
In conjunction with releasing the teaser image, Huawei has officially started pre-orders for this intriguing new handset in China. The global tech community eagerly anticipates its full launch, scheduled for September 10. This marks the first time the public will get a hands-on experience with a smartphone of this unique form factor.
As part of its advanced display setup, Huawei has partnered with BOE, a leading display manufacturer. According to Chen Yanshun, BOE’s chairman, they worked closely with Huawei to perfect the display technology used in the device, which is speculated to be featured on the upcoming Huawei Mate XT.
Thanks to early pre-order details, we know that the phone will come in two variants for the Chinese market: one with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, and a higher-end version with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. These configurations are indicative of Huawei’s intent to position this device in the premium smartphone category.
Global Availability Still Uncertain
As for its availability outside of China, it remains unclear if or when Huawei will introduce the tri-fold smartphone to international markets. There’s speculation that if a global release happens, it will likely take place either later this year or sometime next year. Given that this is a trailblazing device, there’s a possibility Huawei may opt to limit its initial release to its domestic market.
Interestingly, Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei’s consumer business group, was spotted using the tri-fold phone in both its folded and unfolded forms at recent events, sparking further excitement among tech enthusiasts. The sightings have generated even more anticipation for the official unveiling.
