Huawei has officially revealed the Mate XT Ultimate Design, the world’s first tri-fold smartphone. After numerous leaks and teasers, the tech giant made the announcement in China, introducing the device with bold features that set it apart from the foldable phones we’ve seen so far.

A Pioneering Design with Dual Hinges and Expansive Display

The Huawei Mate XT boasts an innovative design, utilizing two hinges to support a flexible OLED display that measures an impressive 10.2 inches when fully unfolded. Offering a 3K resolution with a 16:11 aspect ratio, the display is significantly larger than the typical foldables on the market, which usually cap at around 8 inches. Whether you prefer using one, two, or all three screen sections, this device adapts to your needs, providing flexibility unmatched by any other smartphone.

When using only a single screen, you get a 6.4-inch display with a resolution of 2232 x 1008. If two sections are unfolded, the screen expands to 7.9 inches with a resolution of 2048 x 2232, making multitasking smoother and more immersive.

Cutting-Edge Display Technology: A Visual Feast

The LTPO OLED display in the Huawei Mate XT features advanced 1,440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming for comfortable viewing in any lighting conditions. The 240Hz touch sampling rate ensures smooth, responsive touch interaction. To protect this expansive screen, Huawei has opted for Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG), giving it the durability needed for everyday use.

The exterior of the Huawei Mate XT blends metal and vegan leather, with each section covered in vegan leather for a premium feel. At the back, an octagonal camera module adds to the phone’s sleek design, contributing to its futuristic aesthetic.

High-Performance Specs: 16GB RAM, 5,600mAh Battery, and More

While Huawei has yet to officially confirm the processor powering the Mate XT, it’s rumored to be the Kirin 9010—the same chip found in the company’s latest Pura 70 smartphones. Backing this powerful processor is 16GB of RAM, paired with storage options ranging from 256GB to a massive 1TB.

Contrary to earlier rumors, the phone is equipped with a 5,600mAh silicon-carbon battery rather than an 8,000mAh unit. Although this capacity is generally ample for foldables, it’s uncertain how it will hold up with the tri-fold design when fully unfolded. Only time and user feedback will tell.

For charging, the Huawei Mate XT supports 66W wired charging, 50W wireless charging, and 7.5W reverse wireless charging, all while including a charger in the box—a rarity in today’s smartphone market.

Camera Setup: Versatile and Feature-Packed

Huawei hasn’t skimped on the cameras, packing the Huawei Mate XT with a 50-megapixel main sensor that offers a variable aperture from f/1.4 to f/4.0 and optical image stabilization (OIS). Accompanying the main camera is a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens and a 12-megapixel periscope telephoto camera with 5.5x optical zoom. Selfies are handled by an 8-megapixel front camera.

Other Noteworthy Features

Running on HarmonyOS 4.2, the Huawei Mate XT offers seamless software integration with Bluetooth 5.2 and stereo speakers. Available in Red and Black, both versions feature luxurious gold accents, adding an extra touch of elegance to this high-end device.

A Surprisingly Manageable Size and Weight

Despite its large size, the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design remains impressively lightweight, coming in at just 298 grams. When fully unfolded, it measures 156.7 x 219 x 4.75mm, and when in single-screen mode, it becomes a more compact 156.7 x 73.5 x 12.8mm.

Price and Availability

As expected for such an innovative device, the Huawei Mate XT carries a hefty price tag. It starts at CNY 19,999 ($2,809), with the top-tier model priced at CNY 23,999 ($3,371). Whether it will be available outside of China is still unclear, though if it does launch in other regions, expect the price to climb even higher due to its exclusivity.
