Guerrilla Games has officially announced Horizon Zero Dawn remastered version , set to release on October 31, 2024. The remaster, led by Jan-Bart van Beek, the studio’s Art and Animation Director, aims to bring the game’s visuals up to par with Horizon Forbidden West. This includes extensive updates to character models, animation, textures, and lighting, all optimized for the PlayStation 5 and high-end PCs.
Significant Technological Advances Since the Original Release
Van Beek pointed out that, since the game’s original release seven years ago, advances in technology have opened up new possibilities in game development. The remaster features over 10 hours of re-recorded audio and motion capture (mocap), with the goal of enhancing the overall visual fidelity of the game.
The remaster has been developed in collaboration with Nixxes, a Dutch video game developer known for its work on PC game ports. The PC version of Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered will also include support for ultra-wide resolutions and technologies like NVIDIA’s DLSS 3, which enhances performance through AI-based rendering.
Enhanced Audio and Accessibility Features
Audio improvements are a key part of the remaster, including the implementation of Dolby Atmos rendering for a more immersive sound experience. Additionally, the game will retain accessibility features from the original version, such as remappable controls and haptic cues. New accessibility options include an optional setting that notifies players of interactable elements using sound and haptic feedback, providing more inclusive gameplay.
Includes The Frozen Wilds Expansion
The remaster will not only include the base game but also The Frozen Wilds expansion, which adds new lands, machines, and skills for players to explore. This makes the remastered version a comprehensive package for both new players and those revisiting the game.
Upgrade Path for Existing Owners
For players who already own Horizon Zero Dawn or the complete edition, an upgrade path is available. The remastered version can be accessed for $10 on both PlayStation 5 and PC platforms, including Steam and the Epic Games Store. This offer also applies to players who claimed the game through Sony’s Play at Home program during the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, there are limitations for those with physical PS4 copies of the game. Players who want to upgrade from a disc version will need to insert the disc into their PS5 each time they play. Those with the disc-free version of the PS5 will not be able to take advantage of this offer.
PlayStation 5 Pro Compatibility
In addition to standard PlayStation 5 support, the remaster is also compatible with the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro, which launches on November 7. The upgraded hardware of the PS5 Pro will further enhance the game’s performance, delivering smoother gameplay and faster load times.
Release Date and Pricing
Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered will be available for purchase starting October 31, 2024, at a price of $50 for new buyers. The $10 upgrade path for existing owners makes this an accessible option for those looking to experience the enhanced version without purchasing a full-price game.
