Fans eager to experience the thrill of rampaging through the streets of San Andreas in virtual reality are in for some disappointing news. The VR version of the iconic game has been put “on hold indefinitely,” according to a report by IGN.
Announced three years ago, this San Andreas VR Remake was initially slated for release on the Quest 2 platform. Fast forward to the current era of the Quest 3, and there’s still no sign of the game. While this indefinite hold doesn’t rule out a future release entirely, it certainly dims the prospects.
The confirmation came from Meta Quest VR’s official YouTube account, responding to a comment on an unrelated trailer: “GTA: San Andreas VR Remake is on hold indefinitely while we both focus on other projects. We look forward to working with our friends at Rockstar in the future.”
The San Andreas VR Remake adaptation was first unveiled at the Facebook Connect event in October 2021, before the rebranding to Meta. At the time, it was touted as “a project many years in the making.” Unfortunately, the additional three years have not yielded a completed game.
Despite the initial excitement, there has been a conspicuous absence of promotional materials. No screenshots, gameplay footage, or trailers have been released. Yet, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg hinted at some progress, mentioning that “this new version” would “offer players an entirely new way to experience this iconic open world in virtual reality.”
No official reason has been provided for the hold. However, the development of a VR game of this scale is undoubtedly a costly endeavor. Coupled with reports of a contracting VR market, these factors might have influenced the decision to pause the project.
