Seven companies specializing in licensing music, images, videos, and datasets for AI training have established the Dataset Providers Alliance (DPA). The trade group aims to advocate for ethical data sourcing, protect intellectual property rights, and ensure rights for individuals depicted in datasets.
Founding Members
- Rightsify (US music dataset company)
- vAIsual (image licensing service)
- Pixta (Japanese stock photo provider)
- Datarade (German data marketplace)
The Need for Ethical AI Training
The recent surge in generative AI technologies has sparked a heated debate on copyright laws and content creators’ rights. Developers have been training AI models using vast amounts of content, often scraped from the internet without consent. This has led to a string of copyright lawsuits against tech giants like Google, Meta, and OpenAI.
DPA’s Objectives
- Ethical Data Sourcing: Ensure that datasets are obtained legally and ethically.
- Intellectual Property Protection: Safeguard content owners’ rights.
- Transparency and Accountability: Promote transparency in dataset transactions and advocate for legislation like the NO FAKES Act and the Generative AI Copyright Disclosure Act.
Quote
“Advocacy will be a big part of it because everyone’s taken their positions on AI and copyright, but a lot of these battles are yet to be solved and it’s going to take a while for them to be,” said Alex Bestall, CEO of Rightsify and GCX.
Next Steps
The DPA plans to publish a white paper outlining its positions in July and will press for legislation requiring more transparency in Ethical AI Training data.
