Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has unveiled its latest artificial intelligence (AI) processors, the MI325X accelerator, and detailed its plan to develop AI chips over the next two years. This move aims to challenge industry leader Nvidia’s dominance in the lucrative market for AI semiconductors.
The demand for advanced AI chips has skyrocketed, driven by the development of generative AI programs. AMD has been vying to compete with Nvidia, which currently commands about 80% of the market share. Both companies have committed to an annual release cycle to meet the market’s demands.
AMD’s AI Chip Lineup
AMD introduced three new AI chip series:
- MI325X: Available in Q4 2024
- MI350: Expected in 2025, with a 35x performance boost in inference compared to the current MI300 series
- MI400: Arriving in 2026, based on the “Next” architecture
Nvidia’s Response
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced the company’s next-generation AI chip platform, Rubin, which will include GPUs, CPUs, and networking chips, set to be rolled out in 2026.

Market Reaction
AMD shares rose 1.4%, while Nvidia shares increased by 3% before the bell on Monday. AMD has more than doubled in value since the start of 2023, while Nvidia’s shares have risen over seven-fold in the same period.
Technalysis Research chief analyst Bob O’Donnell noted that AMD is taking Nvidia head-on, and companies seeking alternatives to Nvidia will be pleased with AMD’s offerings.
AI Chip Sales Estimates
AMD expects AI chip sales of roughly $4 billion for 2024, an increase of $500 million from its prior estimate.
AMD detailed its latest generation of central processor units (CPUs), expected to be available in the second half of 2024. The company also introduced new neural processing units (NPUs) dedicated to handling on-device AI tasks in AI PCs.
PC providers like HP and Lenovo will release devices featuring AMD’s AI PC chips. AMD’s processors exceed Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC requirements, paving the way for widespread adoption.
