As Apple’s WWDC 2024 event approaches, speculation is building about the AI features that will be unveiled in iOS 18.
A new report reveals that a significantly upgraded version of Siri will be at the forefront of these updates. Apple has been working to make Siri a more formidable competitor to ChatGPT for over a year, and the results are promising.
The new Siri will be “more conversational and versatile,” capable of engaging in extended conversations rather than simply responding to individual questions. Additionally, it will excel at tasks such as setting timers, managing calendar appointments, and creating lists. Furthermore, Siri will be able to summarize text messages, a feature that has been hinted at previously.
Apple‘s AI strategy involves developing its own in-house Large Language Models (LLMs) for both local, on-device processing and cloud-based applications. However, the company will also integrate a third-party chatbot into its software, likely either ChatGPT from OpenAI or Google Gemini. This approach mirrors Apple’s search strategy, where Siri can search the web but relies on Google for the actual searching.
While there may be some overlap between Apple’s in-house LLMs and the integrated chatbot, the exact boundaries between the two services are unclear. Hopefully, all will be revealed at WWDC 2024, which kicks off on June 10.
